Close a product experiment with a decision and a reusable evidence record

AI-assisted editorial field note · Educational planning framework

What should an experiment closeout document contain?

Record the original question, tested conditions, observed result, limitations and next decision. A closeout prevents an experiment from becoming a vague success story or a feature that remains forever because nobody reviewed it. The result can support keeping, revising or removing the change. Learning that a hypothesis was wrong is still useful when it changes the next action.

Put it into practice

  1. Restate the hypothesis

Use the wording agreed before the test. Note any changes to audience, scope or measurement so readers can interpret the result correctly.

  2. Show evidence and guardrails

Include the outcome measure, relevant observations and side effects. Separate recorded data from the team's explanation of why the result occurred.

  3. Describe uncertainty

Identify missing records, sample limitations and unusual conditions. Explain which conclusions the experiment can support and which remain speculative.

  4. Assign the next action

Choose keep, revise, remove or investigate further. Give the action an owner, a review point and a link to the evidence record.

A worked example

Illustrative scenario — not a customer case study

A trial of shorter onboarding increases completion but produces more incomplete first reports. The closeout rejects a simple conversion-win claim and proposes one contextual setup step before sharing. The team preserves the original test record rather than overwriting it with the revised hypothesis.

Make the next decision

Close the experiment when the result and next action are explicit. If evidence is inconclusive, state the missing information and design a narrower follow-up instead of indefinitely extending the trial.

A mistake to avoid

Do not turn a local improvement into a claim about the whole market. Keep the tested audience and conditions attached to the conclusion.

Is a failed hypothesis worth documenting?

Yes. Record what was tested and what changed in the decision. It helps the team avoid repeating the same assumption and improves the design of later experiments.
