CONNECTIONS

Make your next introduction more useful.

“Can you connect me with someone?” gives a helpful contact very little to work with. A concise connection brief makes the request specific.

Explain the situation in two sentences

Describe your business, current stage and the challenge in front of you. Avoid sending a long company history before the recipient understands the need.

Describe the fit you are looking for

Name the expertise, context or capability that matters. Ask for a relevant conversation rather than the most impressive title. Explain what you can contribute as well.

Give the first conversation a clear outcome

Choose a small objective: validate an assumption, understand a constraint or explore whether a partnership is worth further discussion. Make it easy for both sides to decide on a next step.

Respect time and context

Share enough information to establish fit. Keep sensitive material out of an initial introduction. Confirm the other person is comfortable before forwarding private contact details.

Close the loop

After the conversation, capture the action, owner and review date. If there is no fit, thank the other person and move on. A useful connection does not always become a commercial relationship.
