Plan a five-day customer research sprint around one decision

AI-assisted editorial field note · Educational planning framework

What should a short customer research sprint produce?

A short sprint should reduce uncertainty about one decision and leave an evidence record for the next test. It is not a promise to validate an entire business in five days. Limit the scope to a segment, a workflow and a question you can investigate through available participants. Treat recruitment failures and unanswered questions as part of the result.

Put it into practice

  1. Day one: define the decision

Write the decision, competing explanations and participant criteria. Prepare neutral questions and a small evidence table before sending invitations.

  2. Days two and three: collect examples

Interview relevant participants about recent events. Leave time between conversations to update notes and notice when a question is not producing useful evidence.

  3. Day four: compare the records

Group observations by segment and workflow. Highlight contradictions, recruitment bias and missing evidence instead of selecting only quotes that support the preferred idea.

  4. Day five: choose the next test

Write what changed in your understanding. Select a prototype, offer or follow-up investigation with a clear question, owner and review date.

A worked example

Illustrative scenario — not a customer case study

A team investigates why agencies postpone client-report reviews. After several interviews, the problem shifts from report formatting to missing approval ownership. The sprint output is a test of an approval handoff, a record of the supporting observations and a list of cases where the issue did not occur.

Make the next decision

Judge the sprint by whether a decision became clearer and the next experiment is better defined. Avoid declaring success merely because every planned interview slot was filled.

A mistake to avoid

A deadline can pressure the team into certainty. Publish the unanswered questions alongside the findings and use them to scope the next cycle.

How many interviews must fit into five days?

There is no universal count. Choose a feasible set of relevant conversations and report the sample limitations. More low-fit interviews do not necessarily improve the decision.
